Between Books

After starting this project, I am finding myself drawn to writing new posts everyday. And obviously, I just cant write new book reviews everyday right? So thought will share some other reviews also with you here...experiences that I have between books.
 
Restaurants, hotels, new products, stores...these are some of the things that I am planning to record here. Hope you will like it.

The Silkworm -Robert Galbraith

I didn't know that Robert Galbraith was the pseudonym of JK Rowling until I had almost finished the book. And, since I have not read Harry Potter, Robert Galbraith is a completely new author for me. And now that I am finally sitting to write a review, I realize that I have been reading only whodunit novels for quite some time now. Need to read a different genre soon! Maybe some drama or history or some breezy chicklit? The Silkworm features Robert Galbraith's protagonist -Cormoran Strike -Afghan veteran turned private detective operating out of London. Tall, bulky, with a boxer's profile and tight curly hair, he is short of a leg knee down. Cormoran takes up the case of finding Owen Quine, a not so famous author. His wife approaches Cormoran to track the errant author, who has the annoying habit of going off by himself and returning after a few weeks. Manah Sodhanam - Why I need it

I love running. I took up running only in 2012. I didn't know that running could give me so much joy. Especially long distance running. I was fascinated and was in awe of myself when I completed running my first 5 kilo meters in the gym. I seriously didn't know that my body was capable of actually running for 5 kilo meters...the heavy 70 kg me! Running! OMG!!! I was just beyond myself. While I was a regular walker, who easily walks 10-12 kms in a stretch, running was beyond imagination. Now, when I say running, don't expect something like sprinting or thundering my way to glory. Just imagine a moderately paced jog at a speed of say, 8 kms/hr. Slowly, I got addicted to the endorphin rush and pushed myself to do my first 10km run in 2013 July. Since then, I have ran 2 other 10k runs and currently am practicing for my 21.5K run, which I want to do in June 2015. My mom hates the fact that I run. So does my dad. Manah Sodhanam - Verse 17

Today was a wonderful day. When the mind is at peace, all days are wonderful days. Also, today was Ekadasi. Since new year, I am trying to fast on Ekadasi. Not only for religious reason, but primarily for self control. I have very very poor self control when it comes to food. I am so bad that, right after having my dinner, I will open the fridge and see if there is anything to eat. Seriously! And if you place any form of yummy food in front of me, I just can't resist taking a bite...no matter how full I feel. Another thing is, I can't control my emotions when I don't have food in my tummy. It is like as if I have a split personality. When I don't get food when I am hungry, I throw tantrums -anger, weeping, irrational decisions...uff. "Hangry" (Hungry + angry) is the perfect expression for what I go through during those times. My Guru tells that During Ekadasi, there is an abundance of energy around us, so that we can survive with little or no food ...

Getting Yoga Ready (5) - Aparighraha

Image courtesy www.doyouyoga.com The last of the five yamas is aparighraha. Parighraha means grasping / holing on tight. So obviously a-parighraha means non-grasping. What is the ultimate thing that I am grasping on to tightly? Isn't it my life? And how is it that I am perceiving this "life" right now? As this body -the gross physical form, and as the mind -the subtle astral form. I am holing on tight to these two as the only definition and expression of the "life" that is in me. Letting go of the misconception that the Self/Life is the body and the mind is the ultimate meaning and practice of aparighraha. Going a little further, if I examine WHY I tend to hold on tightly , it is purely driven by fear. All of our thoughts, words and actions are driven either by love or by fear . Meditative Mornings

Mornings are my most productive times. Am not talking about pre-dawn times when everyone is still asleep. No no.... I am mostly leading a yoga session during those times. Am talking about the comfortable 7-7.30 am types when we wake up without the aid of the alarm. The body and mind refreshed by sleeping as long as it needs, but not so long that half the day is already gone. On such days, especially like this Sunday morning, when I am not already pulled in so many directions and not constantly checking the clock, I like to indulge. But the problem with indulging is, I have too many favourite things to indulge :) I Start with all enthusiasm...brewing a hot strong sweet coffee and opening the Sunday express. As I am half way through the coffee, my mind stops paying attention to the sweet aromatic warmth sliding into my soul and starts jumping... YAVANMALA  NA  KSIYANTE  MANASO  RAGARUPAKAH TAVANNA  TATTVAJIJNASA  JAYATE  MANUSE  HRDI As long as the impurities of the mind such as attachment etc, are not weakened or washed away, the desire to know the truth does not raise in the human heart. Taken as is, this sounds like, "If your mind is not evolved, then you wont be interested in knowing the truth." Can we say that? Absolutely not. But at least, we can find a bit of solace in this lines because, more often than not, people who get into this introspection mode are the ones who get ridiculed. You don't believe me? Well, let me tell you this. I shamelessly share all that I write through facebook, whatsapp, sms and what not. I hound the people I know to go read my blogs. Gods, kings and slaves : The Seige of Madurai -By R. Venketesh

 Finally, after 3 years of marriage, my family and I travelled to Trichy and Madurai to offer our prayers to Gods and Goddesses.   Madurai Meenakshi holds a very special place in my heart. Even after visiting numerous temples all over south India, I feel that no temple is as beautiful and no deity is as captivating as Meenakshi. My father's family is native to Madurai and before my wedding, we would definitely visit Meenakshi temple at least once in two years.   Meenakshi temple is a treasure trove of stories -historical and mythological. The story that captivated my interest this time was that of Malik Kafur and the stone elephants. My father told us how the invading Muslim army of Allauddin Khilji were on a temple destrying spree.
