Between Books

After starting this project, I am finding myself drawn to writing new posts everyday. And obviously, I just cant write new book reviews everyday right? So thought will share some other reviews also with you here...experiences that I have between books.
 
Restaurants, hotels, new products, stores...these are some of the things that I am planning to record here. Hope you will like it.

Why we do what we do is a very important question. And I had been struggling to answer this for the five years I was working in commercial banking. Why am I doing this job? Apart from salary, there was absolutely no other answer that I could give myself. Good pay, yes. In fact, a very good pay. Work life balance, yes. It was a five day week work. Work profile, yes. I had to interact with and manage the commercial accounts. Which means, low volume and high value. So yes, it was a good profile with amazing exposure and learning. But, I hated going to work. Faith Checklist

I rarely engage in social media. My feed is mostly full of quotes and pictures of the Masters, yoga videos and cat/dog other animal videos. The posts that I put up will either be related to yoga / vedanta / special needs. To preserve my own sanity, I have unfollowed people who post either extreme left or extreme right posts, posts that glorify / demean religion or caste etc.  One cannot deny that social media has tremendous power in shaping people's opinion, give a glimpse of lived experiences of those whom we otherwise may not come across in real life, provide a platform for everyone to voice their side of the story, raise awareness of issues that are not spotlighted by main stream media etc. It is a wonderful tool, a great boon to connect people across the world, it can broaden our horizons...basically it has unlimited power. Manah Sodhanam -Verse 10

We saw how Lord Krishna himself attests to the practice of inquiry here.  The 10th verse is like a promise that we make to ourselves to consciously practice self inquiry to remove the impurities of mind, like anger, fear, likes, dislikes etc. ETAD  BHAGAVATO  VAKYAN  SVATMASUDDHYAIKASIDDHAYE VICARYATE  MAYA  SAMYA  SRI  HARIRME  PRASIDATAM Through these lines, we promise to ourselves that " I undertake inquiry into the meaning of these words of Lord, for the sole purpose of gaining purity of mind. May Sri Hari be pleased with me and bless me." I am really amazed by this line. We are saying here that we will inquire into the meaning of the Lord's statement to the best of our ability. While we have already seen that we have to have full faith in the words of the Vedas and the teachings of our Guru,  here the text says that we have to inquire into it. Karma Yoga - Part 2 -Practice and benefits

In the last post , we saw what is the meaning of Karma (Karma means action) and what prompts us to act. Now, let us look at the word Yoga. Yoga: Beside the done to death definition of yoga coming from the root word "yuj" and it means union, the term yoga here means the state of complete awareness and mindfulness. The state in which our mind is completely focused on the task at hand, in exclusion to all other thoughts. If we observe our mind, we often find that the thoughts are either from the past memories or about future expectations. Yoga is the state of "being" fully in the present moment. So, if we now look at the term Karma Yoga, it means mindful action. I used to think that people who have realized the truth and who live with complete self awareness -or rather, with awareness of the "Self" - will all be like the great yogis and Godmen -having some special power in them. I had this very vague picture of a person full of divine aura, who is always calm and smiling, who knows how the future will unfold, who knows all the secrets that this world holds, who is free from all sorrows etc etc. Visually, I used to imagine a man with long white beard and flowing robes in white, his face the very expression of serenity. Then, last week, I saw the movie, "On A Quest", which is a biopic of Swami Chinmayananda. Manah Sodhanam - Verse 1

PARAMATMA'  DVAYANANDAH  SARVABHUTASTHITO'  PI  HA AJNANENAVRTO  DRSTAH  TATHAIVA  CA  MANOMALAIH That sounds pretty straight forward eh? The Paramatma is non dual and full of bliss...present in all beings. But then, we don't get to experience the Paramatma due to our own ignorance and impurities of the mind. The thing that really stumps me is this truth -stated over and over and over in all scriptures -that we are beings of bliss. Our true state is that of happiness. If we can actually get to experience that bliss, won't our lives be just fantastic? Our happiness is strongly associated with what we have and don't have. A good job, a steady income, health, love, children, new car, own house, vacations -we run behind all these things and much more - just for the sake of some imagined, temporary happiness. Manah Sodhanam - Why I need it

I love running. I took up running only in 2012. I didn't know that running could give me so much joy. Especially long distance running. I was fascinated and was in awe of myself when I completed running my first 5 kilo meters in the gym. I seriously didn't know that my body was capable of actually running for 5 kilo meters...the heavy 70 kg me! Running! OMG!!! I was just beyond myself. While I was a regular walker, who easily walks 10-12 kms in a stretch, running was beyond imagination. Now, when I say running, don't expect something like sprinting or thundering my way to glory. Just imagine a moderately paced jog at a speed of say, 8 kms/hr. Slowly, I got addicted to the endorphin rush and pushed myself to do my first 10km run in 2013 July. Since then, I have ran 2 other 10k runs and currently am practicing for my 21.5K run, which I want to do in June 2015. My mom hates the fact that I run. So does my dad.
