Between Books

After starting this project, I am finding myself drawn to writing new posts everyday. And obviously, I just cant write new book reviews everyday right? So thought will share some other reviews also with you here...experiences that I have between books.
 
Restaurants, hotels, new products, stores...these are some of the things that I am planning to record here. Hope you will like it.

Why we do what we do is a very important question. And I had been struggling to answer this for the five years I was working in commercial banking. Why am I doing this job? Apart from salary, there was absolutely no other answer that I could give myself. Good pay, yes. In fact, a very good pay. Work life balance, yes. It was a five day week work. Work profile, yes. I had to interact with and manage the commercial accounts. Which means, low volume and high value. So yes, it was a good profile with amazing exposure and learning. But, I hated going to work. The Chore Trap

A house is a beast by itself. It enslaves and ties one up with an innumerable and inexhaustible array of chores. I rrespective of whether one has a help to assist with domestic work or one does it all by oneself, there is never a dearth of these chores to complete.  And the trap here is, being caught up in a constant whirl of chores lulls you with a false sense of productivity and achievement. The chores may vary slightly from house to house, depending upon what chore falls on your head to what gets done by the help, but the essence is this -KEEP CLEANING TILL YOU DIE. How much longer will India be the land of festivals?

There are so many things that I want to write here, that I don't know where to start. But there was one predominant thought I had when I got up at 3.30 am on Sunday morning which I wanted to compulsorily blog about -The Karadaiyan Nombu. For the uninitiated, Karadayan Nombu falls on the first day of "Pangunii" month as per the Tamil calendar. Legend has it that Savitri, rescued her husband Satyavan's life from Yama on this day. So every year, young girls and married women pray to the Goddess to bless them with good husbands and for longevity and good health of their husbands respectively. We wear a yellow thread around our neck on this day and make a special delicacy -the jaggery adai and the salt adai. In love With My Body

This new year, I have a confession to make. A freak injury has me sitting out of any forms of exercise for 3 weeks. The doctor's advice of not sitting down cross legged and not exercising for three whole weeks was a complete shocker. I have never gone without exercising for three whole weeks ever since 2008! While it is only day 5 of 21, this no exercise rule has left me with more than one and half hours of extra time every day and has also got me thinking about my lifestyle in general and my weight in particular.  I have never been a skinny person. Broad shoulders, long limbs and wide hips, I have a frame that will make me look like a skinny buffalo even if I lose weight. While in the final year of my UG, it finally dawned on me that maybe I have to lose some weight, as I started sporting a nice round small paunch that slightly stuck out of my dress. Karma Yoga -Part 1 -What and Why

For the longest time, I was under the impression that the term Karma yoga only means doing social service -maybe sweating it out in a beach clean up, sweeping the temples, cleaning the animals in a shelter and doing physical work for charities and NGOs. And needless to say, I felt that Karma Yoga makes no sense because I didn't have enough time to walk around with a broom stick. Looking back, it kind of feels funny that I have always associated Karma Yoga with sweeping and mopping.  Then came my initial Vedanta classes. A Married Woman - Manju Kapur

I rarely read Indian authors. One of the very few books that I enjoyed by Indian authors are Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai and Two Fates by Judy Balan. The reason I don't prefer books by Indian authors is this -when I read books set in a foreign culture and locale, I can't really relate to it. I just take what is being written at face value and happily get carried away by the book. But, when the book is set in an Indian context, with Indian characters and Indian locales, I don't really enjoy the book if I don't relate to it. I am not saying that I am fully aware and conversant with the diverse cultural and socio economic strata of India, but this book by Manju Kapur disappointed, even irritated me in so many levels. On Oneness - why can't we accept it -Part 3

No matter how many examples are given, no matter in how many different ways this Truth is repeated over and over again by different Masters from times immemorial, we still can't accept that we are one -WE ALL ARE ONE, encompassing the entire universe. Even after exhaustive inquiry into the nature of things, we may come to intellectually understand that we are one, but since we lack experiential understanding, we struggle to accept this. Listed below are some thoughts on this struggle. What are the practical difficulties that we face in bringing about this acceptance?
