Between Books

After starting this project, I am finding myself drawn to writing new posts everyday. And obviously, I just cant write new book reviews everyday right? So thought will share some other reviews also with you here...experiences that I have between books.
 
Restaurants, hotels, new products, stores...these are some of the things that I am planning to record here. Hope you will like it.

Love, such a commonly used word. We all know what it means. An intense like for something, a feeling of attraction etc etc. In today's colloquial parlance, we "love" anything and everything. Right from the pizza with extra cheese topping to the new dress that we brought. We love our new haircut, we loved the trip that we took last year, we love that actor and we love hanging out with friends.  We love the rain and we love that cup of coffee. Manah Sodhanam -Verse 4

Before we start on the verse, let us take a moment to pay respect to all the diet plans and food promises that we have buried alive with all those yummy food that we have tucked in shamelessly. What?? Don't tell me that you have never felt, especially after a guilty junk food binge, that it is about time you should start eating healthy. Even though I run and keep myself active, I have a weakness for salt. I just love to munch on savories. And you know what is even worse? I tend to keep eating something if I feel bored. I definitely need something in my mouth when I am engrossed in a book. And I get very tempted to eat when I see food. I can't stop myself from grabbing that handful of chips if I see the packet lying on the table, even if it is just 2 minutes after finishing my dinner. While I know that eating junk is bad, I sometimes just can't control myself. Even if I have enjoyed the benefits of healthy eating, it is so easy to stray off the path and indulge myself....

Manah Sodhanam -Verse 5

NISTHA  BHAVAT  PARANANDO  JIVANMUKTASYA  YOGINAH SADHAKAIR-NANUBHUYETA  VIPHALAM  TARHI  SADHANAM In the absence of this abidance -i.e, the abidance in the truth and supreme self, seekers do not experience the supreme bliss enjoyed by jivanmuktas. When this supreme bliss is not experienced, then the seekers' practice become fruitless. Who are the Jivanmuktas? Remember, I mentioned earlier about being in the state of bliss and oneness while going on with our lives? Those blessed ones are the jivanmuktas -ie, they have attained mukti, or freedom from all the sorrows of life, even while living. This verse says that unless we firmly abide by the truth, we cannot attain the state of jivan mukti. And if we don't attain jivanmukti, all our sadhanas or spiritual practice becomes useless. On Oneness –Accepting the obvious –Part 2

We all intuitively know about this oneness . However, our identification with our own body, mind and intellect creates a strong and distinct feeling of “me and everything else that is not me” . And this me is so so so small and tiny that it extends only upto the boundary of our own body. So we identify with this small part of Our whole and struggle through this life, being tossed up and down in the waves of joys and sorrows. However, when we slowly expand our sense of identification with All That Is, then our individual ego disappears and we become our True Self –the glorious infinite and absolute. All this is fine, but it seems very wild to even begin to imagine us as something other than this body. The attachment to the body is so strong that even though we can intellectually and to some extent intuitively understand that we all are one, we cannot but shake off the feeling of I ness and my ness that is associated with the body. Getting Yoga Ready (10) - Ishwara Pranidana

It has taken me the longest to write about this last Niyama which is also the final and ultimate step of the yama niyama series. For everything else -right from satya to svadyaya, it takes a little bit of will, a little mindfulness, some intellectual discrimination and a lot of persistence. However, for Ishwara Pranidana, all it takes is complete surrender of the self, which means completely letting go of one's ego. Ego: In vedantic terms, ego is the identification of the Self with the body, mind and intellect, whereby we become this small and often petty "individual", whereas our true nature is that of infinite existence conscious bliss. In other words, anything that we say after "I am" is an expression of the ego. This ego is the glue that binds the self or the soul to this body, mind and intelligence (BMI). After this serious rant on happiness , I have thought of some thing that I like to call as the "Happiness Litmus Test". It is actually pretty simple. According to all scriptures and great masters, the true state of bliss is not dependent on anything or anyone. This bliss comes from within and it is permanent. To identify the true bliss, just ask yourself this simple question when anything makes you happy -"Will the absence of this thing/ person/ scenario cause me grief?" If yes, then what you are experiencing is transient and impermanent. For example, the day of salary credit brings about a flash of joy and relief. But, the thought of not having that money brings great fear and anxiety. Similarly, your kids are a source of great joy. But the thought of anything untoward happening to them makes us sad and worried. So all those things that we think brings us happiness do not really do so. There are many things / activities that are touted not just as an activity, but as a lifestyle by itself. Like, "running life style", or "Page 3 lifestyle" or the "corporate life style", to name a few. But all these lifestyles have an unwritten code of rules that one has to adhere to, so that they can fit in and function well. I can't be a runner if I don't adhere to the basic discipline of strengthening my body. I can't be a socialite if I don't understand and play with the social etiquettes and power politics.
